چکیده

According to the EU Habitats Directive, heathlands are “natural habitats of community interest”. Heathland management aims at conserving these habitats threatened by various changes, including successional processes leading to forest vegetation. We investigate the dynamics of woody species to the detriment of heathland over a period of 60 years in the Fontainebleau forest and we examine the effects of soil types, soil depth and topography parameters on heathland stability. We assess changes in forest cover between 1946 and 2003 by comparing vegetation maps derived from aerial photographs coupled to GIS analyses. The results show the loss of more than 75% of heathland during 1946–2003 due to tree colonisation of abandoned heathland. We detected differences in the dynamics of colonisation between coniferous and deciduous trees. The colonisation of heathland by coniferous species was faster over the last 20 years of our study period. Tree encroachment was faster in north-facing areas and in areas of acidic luvisols. While this dynamic was very slow in acid sandstone soils, heathland stability was more important in shallow soils on flat and south facing areas. Our study has the potential to assist land managers in selecting those heathland areas that will be easier to conserve and/or to restore by focusing on areas and OPEN ACCESS ISPRS Int. J. Geo-Inf. 2015, 4 958 spatial conditions that prevent forest colonisation and hence favour the long-term stability of heathland.

Dynamics and Structural characteristics of a natural unlogged oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stand during a 5-years period in Shast Kalate Forest, Northern Iran

Investigation on structure and dynamics of natural forest ecosystems is an important issue for silvicultural decisions. The aim of this study is to analysis dynamics and structure of a beech stand during 5-year period in the Shast Kalateh forest in the Caspian region, North of Iran. Data were collected from a 16.9ha permanent research plot established in a natural unlogged stand in 2006. All li...

Influence of ground cover on earthworm communities in an unmanaged beech forest: linear gradient studies

Micro-scale changes in earthworm communities and ground cover types were studied along five transect lines in an unmanaged beech forest (Fontainebleau forest, France). Spatial patterns were interpreted to the light of interactions between earthworm species and forest architecture, ground vegetation and quantity as well as quality of litter. The anecic Lumbricus terrestris was associated with pa...

Radar Remote Sensing of a Mixed Deciduous Temperate Forest Results and Perspectives

This paper mainly presents experimental results obtained with different spaceborne and airborne SARs over the Fontainebleau forest, France. Results show that C-band is not suitable either for monitoring the seasonal dynamics of foliage or for estimating forest structural parameters like the standing biomass. As well, X-band is found to be insensitive to biomass variations. In contrast, Land P-b...

Short term responses of two collembolan 1 communities after abrupt environmental perturbation : a field experimental approach 2 3

1 2 A soil transfer field experiment has been designed in order to study (i) whether and how 3 Collembolan communities are affected by a sudden perturbation (a shift from agricultural land 4 to heathland, and the reverse), and (ii) whether species do respond in the same direction and 5 to the same extent according to their habitat preference (ascertained by controls). The study 6 was conducted ...

Root adaptation and nitrogen source acquisition in natural ecosystems.

The capacity for nitrate reduction, as measured by nitrate reductase activity (NRA), was generally low for a range of plant communities in Australia (coastal heathland, rainforest, savanna woodland, monsoon forest, mangrove, open Eucalyptus forest, coral cay open forest) and only a loose relationship existed between NRA and leaf nitrogen concentration. This suggests that nitrate ions are not th...
